LATEST NEWS : VALENTINE’S DAY 2010: LOVE IS EVERY WHERE
Valentine’s Day has been traditionally associated with love and romance since at least the Middle Ages. However, the origins of what is essentially a Christian holy day actually date back more than a thousand years earlier. Originally a day of remembrance for Christian martyrs, Saint Valentine’s Day has been observed on February 14
th in one form or another since late Roman times.
While today, the holiday is firmly-established across the globe as a time when lovers display their affections through the giving of cards and gifts, such as roses, confections and even jewelry, it wasn’t until the late 14
th Century that Valentine’s Day began to mutate into the celebration of love that we know today.
Nobody knows for sure how the holiday came to evolve into the Valentine’s Day we know today, but there is no doubting its significance amongst those who have been struck by Cupid’s arrow. In fact, Valentine’s Day ranks second only to Christmas as the time when most cards are sent.
Although the majority of cards and gifts received on Valentine’s Day are from boyfriends, girlfriends, husbands and wives, the holiday also affords the opportunity for secret admirers to express their true feelings anonymously, shrouding their romantic intensions in a tempting air of mystery. Whether their identities are revealed or not is just part of the game. There’s always next year for those whose love remains unremitted.
For many modern-day sweethearts, cards are just a part of their ritualistic demonstrations of love. Flowers remain ever popular, with a dozen red roses a favorite gift. Perfumes, clothes and chocolates are also traditional Valentine’s Day presents. However, for more serious romantics, the ultimate expression of love comes in the form of jewelry.
Nothing says, “I love you,” like a piece of fine jewelry and while crystal jewelry, silver jewelry and fashion jewelry all make acceptable gifts, it is, without doubt, gold jewelry that wins first place in every girl’s heart.
The sight of red on gold is the ultimate expression of love and you will find all the traditional symbols of romance in the
