Fashion News: Fashion Trends of 2009 to 2010

Not everything passed inspection by the fashion police. One fashion statement that was not everyone's cup of tea was the so-called "double denim" look, while for men, double V necks made a surprise appearance.

In these financially turbulent times, there is a sense of returning to more masculine and feminine extremes as metrosexuality takes a back seat and this was reflected in men's suits, which shifted away from the tight-fitting styles of recent years.

While cufflinks are always a notable exception, men have never been at the forefront of accessorizing, but that changed in 2009 with the fashion of silver brooches perhaps a further theme within a theme of militarization.

Indeed, one of the main trends of men’s fashion in 2009 has been the neo-military look as the elegant Prince Charming met everyone’s favorite rogue, Captain Jack Sparrow, halfway. An offshoot of this was the futuristic gothic ninja style that is expected to grow in 2010.

The military theme transcends genders, too, it seems as the  swashbuckling pirate look has proven equally popular with the ladies who elaborate and accentuate their Sgt. Pepper outfits with silver or crystal jewelry.

For women, the single-shoulder look has been big in 2009 – a trend that allowed exposed necks to be adorned with gold, silver or, increasingly, crystal necklaces. As we head for the autumn and winter months, thigh-high boots, capes and cloaks are the fashion items that no self-respecting girl should be without.

The colors to watch out for this fall are American beauty, purple heart, honey yellow, iron, burnt sienna, nomad, rapture rose, warm olive, majolica blue and crème brulee. While many fashion experts claim that the lack of overpowering tones is indicative of caution and frugality, the outlook is good. 2010 is predicted to be a comeback year with a shift to a sexier, more daring look.
